WHY THE MAP MATTERS

The Progress of Insight can orient practice.
It can also confuse it.

The map is useful because it gives meditators a language for experiences that can otherwise feel strange, intense, or difficult to interpret.

01

It can help you recognize territory

As mindfulness deepens, meditation can move through stages that feel qualitatively different from one another.

The Progress of Insight can help practitioners recognize that some of these experiences are not random, and that others have encountered similar territory before.

02

It can easily be misunderstood

Problems arise when the map is taken too literally, turned into a checklist, or used to constantly diagnose where you think you are.

Different practitioners may experience the stages differently, and compelling meditative experiences do not always mean what we imagine they mean.

03

It is most useful as orientation

A good map should help you understand the terrain without replacing direct practice.

The aim is not to force your experience into a model, but to use the model carefully enough that it supports clarity, discernment, and a more intelligent relationship with what is actually happening.

The map becomes most useful when it helps you practice more clearly, not when it gives you another identity to defend.

WHAT THIS WORKSHOP HELPS CLARIFY

Challenging territory becomes easier to work with when the map is understood well.

The Progress of Insight can be especially useful when meditation begins producing experiences that are difficult to interpret, easy to exaggerate, or hard to place in context.

01

What the map is actually describing

A clearer understanding of the sequence of insight stages and the kinds of shifts in perception, energy, clarity, and difficulty they can involve.

02

How stages can vary in real practice

The map is not experienced identically by everyone. This workshop helps distinguish the structure of the model from the many ways it can actually show up in meditation.

03

Peak experiences and unusual states

Powerful experiences can feel significant without necessarily meaning what we think they mean. The workshop helps place intensity, clarity, energy, and altered states in a more useful context.

04

The impurities of insight

Certain meditative experiences can become seductive, confusing, or mistaken for attainment. Understanding these patterns can help preserve discernment as practice deepens.

05

Difficult and destabilizing territory

Some stages of insight can include fear, dissolution, disorientation, aversion, or a sense that practice has suddenly become much harder. The workshop helps place these experiences within a broader map.

06

How to use the map without becoming trapped by it

The goal is not constant self-diagnosis. It is learning how to use the map as orientation while continuing to trust direct experience and sound meditation practice.

The map is most useful when it increases clarity and discernment, not when it becomes another story about where you think you are.

THE WORKSHOP

Six modules for understanding the inner map of meditation

This lecture series moves from the basic structure of the Progress of Insight into some of the more challenging and easily misunderstood territory that can emerge as practice deepens.

MODULE ONE

How to Hold Your Relationship to the Map

Before using the map, it helps to understand how not to use it.

This opening module explores the right relationship to the Progress of Insight: how the map can orient practice without turning meditation into constant self-diagnosis.

The emphasis is on using the model as a support for discernment rather than forcing your experience to conform to a theory.

MODULE TWO

The Progress of Insight: An Overview of the Inner Map

A clear orientation to the overall sequence.

This module introduces the structure of the Progress of Insight and the way different stages can unfold as mindfulness and insight deepen.

The goal is not memorization, but enough familiarity with the map to recognize its basic logic and understand where different experiences may fit.

MODULE THREE

The Variety of Meditative Experiences

The map is structured. Actual practice is rarely uniform.

Meditators can encounter very different combinations of clarity, energy, stillness, difficulty, intensity, and perceptual change.

This module looks at that range and helps distinguish the underlying structure of the map from the many ways it can appear in lived practice.

MODULE FOUR

Common Peak Experiences on the Meditative Journey

Powerful experiences are not always what they appear to be.

Meditation can produce moments of extraordinary clarity, energy, openness, bliss, insight, or altered perception.

This module places those experiences in context so they can be understood without either dismissing them or over-interpreting them.

MODULE FIVE

Understanding the Impurities of Insight

How not to get stuck in compelling meditative experiences.

Certain experiences that emerge in insight practice can feel profound, convincing, or spiritually significant.

This module examines how these experiences can become objects of attachment or confusion, and why discernment matters as practice becomes more subtle.

MODULE SIX

Navigating the Dark Night of the Soul

Understanding difficult territory without dramatizing it.

Some stages of insight can involve fear, dissolution, aversion, uncertainty, disorientation, or a sense that meditation has become unexpectedly difficult.

This final module explores how to recognize this territory, place it in context, and relate to it with greater clarity and steadiness.

WHO THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR

For meditators who are ready to understand the territory more clearly.

Progress of Insight is designed for practitioners who already have some meditation experience and want a more precise framework for understanding what can unfold as insight practice deepens.

This is an advanced lecture-based workshop.

It is not a beginner meditation course and does not include guided meditations or practice instruction.

This workshop may be especially useful if you:

  • Have an established mindfulness or insight meditation practice
  • Have encountered unusual, intense, or difficult meditative experiences and want a clearer framework for understanding them
  • Are curious about the Progress of Insight but want to avoid rigid stage-chasing or constant self-diagnosis
  • Want to understand peak experiences, the impurities of insight, and difficult territory in better context
  • Teach meditation or support practitioners and want greater clarity about this classical map
  • Prefer careful explanation and conceptual clarity over simplified claims about meditation stages

HOW TO USE THE WORKSHOP

Study the map slowly enough for it to remain useful.

This is challenging theoretical material. You do not need to absorb everything in one pass, and you do not need to memorize the map.

01

Move through the lessons in sequence

The modules build on one another. Begin at the start and let the framework develop gradually rather than jumping directly to the stages that seem most interesting.

02

Give the material some space

There is no need to rush. You may want to pause between modules, especially when the material begins to intersect with your own meditation experience.

03

Use the PDF as a reference

Keep the guide nearby as you move through the workshop, but treat it as an orientation tool rather than something you need to master or memorize.

04

Return to the Q&A when questions arise

The Q&A videos add nuance to the core teaching and can be especially useful once you have enough context for the questions to become meaningful.

05

Revisit the workshop as your practice develops

Some parts of the map may make more sense later than they do now. With lifetime access, you can return whenever new questions or new territory emerge in your practice.

The aim is not to know the map perfectly. It is to understand it well enough that it supports practice rather than getting in the way of it.

Miles Kessler

ABOUT MILES KESSLER

Meditation taught from long practice, not theory alone.

Miles Kessler is a meditation teacher and founder of Integral Dojo. His work brings together decades of meditation practice and teaching with a broader interest in embodiment, psychological development, relationship, and the integration of contemplative practice into life.

Miles has practiced meditation for more than 25 years, including extensive training in the Burmese Mahasi Vipassana tradition, and has accumulated more than 25,000 hours of meditation practice.

His principal meditation teachers include Sayadaw U Pandita and Vivekananda, and his teaching is grounded in the practical realities of sustained insight practice: what practitioners encounter, where confusion tends to arise, and how traditional maps can be used without becoming rigid ideas about experience.

In Progress of Insight, Miles approaches the map in that spirit: as a valuable orientation to meditative territory, but never as a substitute for direct experience, discernment, or sound practice.

About Miles

WHAT STUDENTS SAY

Clear teaching for complex territory.

Miles' style of instruction was ideal because it was easy to understand, but complex enough for experienced students as well. He is an endless resource and inspiration.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A few things to know before you begin.

Is this workshop suitable for beginners?

This workshop is best suited to meditators who already have some experience with mindfulness or insight meditation.

It is not an introductory meditation course and does not teach basic meditation technique from the beginning.

Does the workshop include guided meditations or practice videos?

No. Progress of Insight is a lecture-based workshop focused on understanding the map and the meditative territory it describes.

It includes 50 video lessons, 7 Q&A videos, and a PDF reference guide, but no guided meditations or separate practice videos.

Do I need to understand Buddhist terminology before taking it?

You do not need to be an expert in Buddhist doctrine, but some familiarity with meditation practice will make the material more useful.

The workshop is designed to clarify difficult territory rather than assume that you already understand the Progress of Insight in detail.

Should I use the map to determine exactly what stage I am in?

That is not the purpose of the workshop.

The Progress of Insight can provide useful orientation, but it can become confusing when treated as a rigid checklist or used for constant self-diagnosis. The emphasis throughout the workshop is on using the map carefully and in service of direct practice.

What if I have experienced difficult or unusual states in meditation?

The workshop explores a range of experiences that can arise as insight practice deepens, including intense, confusing, and difficult territory.

It is intended to provide context and orientation. It is not a substitute for individual guidance, medical care, or mental health support when those are needed.

How quickly should I move through the workshop?

There is no required schedule.

Because the material is dense, it may be more useful to move slowly, take breaks between modules, and return to sections as they become relevant to your own practice.

How long do I have access?

You receive lifetime access to the complete workshop, including all 6 modules, 50 lessons, 7 Q&A videos, and the PDF reference guide.

Is there a live component?

No. This version of Progress of Insight is fully self-paced and does not include live sessions or live Q&A.
