A DIFFERENT KIND OF CONTAINER
Meditation deepens through practice. But at certain stages, practice also needs relationship, perspective, honest feedback, and someone who can help you see what you may not be seeing alone.
— Miles Kessler
THIS IS NOT ANOTHER MEDITATION COURSE
At a certain point, progress is less about collecting more teachings and more about learning how to work honestly with your own practice as it unfolds over time.
You do not need an endless stream of new techniques. You need enough continuity to discover what actually matters in your practice.
Meditation brings openings, difficulties, plateaus, blind spots, and questions that are not always easy to interpret alone.
Direct mentorship creates a place to bring what is actually happening in your practice and receive guidance that is specific to you.
The point is not only to deepen meditation on the cushion, but to let practice mature in the way you relate, choose, respond, and live.
THE SHIFT
The Apprenticeship moves the center of gravity from “What should I learn next?” to “What is my practice asking of me now?”
WHY APPRENTICESHIP?
Meditation develops over time. So do the questions, resistances, breakthroughs, and blind spots that come with it. A year-long apprenticeship creates enough continuity to work with practice as a living process rather than a series of isolated experiences.
CONTINUITY
A single conversation can be helpful. Ongoing mentorship reveals patterns. Over months, we can see what repeats, what changes, where you tend to get stuck, and what the practice is actually asking of you.
PERSONAL GUIDANCE
Different stages of practice require different emphases. Sometimes the right direction is discipline. Sometimes it is patience, investigation, embodiment, surrender, or a change of method. Apprenticeship gives us room to discern that together.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Consistency matters. The apprenticeship gives you a rhythm of practice, reflection, conversation, and return so that meditation is less dependent on motivation and more rooted in an ongoing commitment.
CONTEXT
Strong meditation experiences can be inspiring, confusing, destabilizing, or easy to over-interpret. Ongoing guidance helps place them in context without making too much or too little of them.
INTEGRATION
Practice inevitably meets relationship, work, emotion, identity, conflict, and shadow. Apprenticeship gives us space to explore how meditation functions beyond formal sitting and how insight becomes lived capacity.
THE VALUE OF A YEAR
Twelve months is long enough for practice to move through different seasons: momentum and resistance, clarity and uncertainty, opening and integration. That is where the deeper value of apprenticeship begins to emerge.
WHAT DIRECT MENTORSHIP LOOKS LIKE
The Apprenticeship combines individual guidance, small-group reflection, ongoing access, and deeper psychological work so that your meditation is supported in context rather than left to unfold in isolation.
PRIVATE MENTORSHIP
A focused one-to-one session with Miles to work directly with your current practice, questions, obstacles, insights, and next steps.
SMALL-GROUP COACHING
A space to bring practice questions into a small-group setting, learn from the experience of others, and hear how similar themes can show up differently across practitioners.
ONGOING ACCESS
Practice does not always wait for the next scheduled session. The private back-channel gives you a way to bring timely questions, reflections, and practice developments into the mentorship as they arise.
SHADOW & INTEGRATION
When meditation begins to expose patterns that are not resolved through attention alone, these sessions create space to work more directly with disowned material, emotional patterns, and psychological integration.
ONGOING PRACTICE COMMUNITY
Your Apprenticeship includes participation in the Meditation Discovery Cycle, giving you an ongoing rhythm of teaching, practice, Q&A, Sangha, and community throughout the year.
THE POINT OF DIRECT ACCESS
The value is not simply having more contact with a teacher. It is having enough continuity for the guidance to become specific, cumulative, and responsive to the actual evolution of your practice.
MEDITATION DISCOVERY CYCLE INCLUDED
The Meditation Discovery Cycle is included for the full year of your Apprenticeship. It gives you a consistent rhythm of teaching, practice, reflection, Q&A, and Sangha alongside your direct work with Miles.
TEACHING & PRACTICE
Ongoing teaching and guided practice give you a broader context for what you are exploring individually in the Apprenticeship.
PRACTICE Q&A
The Q&A rhythm gives you another point of contact for working with meditation challenges, emerging insights, and practical questions.
SANGHA
The community dimension helps keep meditation connected to shared inquiry, mutual support, and the lived realities of the path.
DAILY PRACTICE
The Daily Virtual Sitting Room gives you a simple structure for returning to formal practice and maintaining rhythm throughout the year.
ONGOING RESOURCES
Weekly guidance, guided meditations, and selected archive material provide additional support without turning the Apprenticeship into a content-heavy course.
TWO LEVELS OF SUPPORT
Meditation Discovery Cycle
Gives you the ongoing communal rhythm: teaching, sitting, inquiry, Sangha, and continued exposure to the Dharma.
Meditation Apprenticeship
Gives you the individual continuity: direct guidance, personal discernment, shadow work, and a relationship with your practice over time.
THE DIFFERENCE
MDC keeps you in the stream of practice. The Apprenticeship helps you understand where you are in that stream, what is emerging, and how to work with it more skillfully.
THE RHYTHM OF THE YEAR
The Apprenticeship is built around repetition, reflection, and return. Each month gives you multiple ways to stay connected to the practice without turning the year into an overloaded schedule.
MONTHLY
A 30-minute one-to-one session with Miles focused on your current practice, questions, obstacles, insights, and direction.
MONTHLY
A 60-minute session for reflection, shared inquiry, and learning from the practice experiences of the other apprentices.
ONGOING
Teaching, practice, Q&A, Sangha, weekly guidance, and the Daily Virtual Sitting Room provide the wider practice rhythm throughout the year.
BETWEEN SESSIONS
A direct WhatsApp channel gives you a place to bring timely questions and developments instead of waiting until the next scheduled session.
DURING THE YEAR
Dedicated sessions for working more directly with psychological patterns, disowned material, and integration when those dimensions become relevant to the practice.
THE LONGER ARC
Establish rhythm
Notice patterns
Refine practice
Meet resistance
Deepen discernment
Integrate what changes
WHY A YEAR?
Because meaningful practice rarely unfolds in a straight line. A year gives us enough time to see what happens when enthusiasm fades, when old patterns return, when insight opens, and when the practice begins to ask something different of you.
WHAT WE MAY WORK WITH
The Apprenticeship is not organized around a fixed syllabus. What we work with depends on what is actually happening in your practice, your life, and the larger arc of your development.
When meditation feels repetitive, flat, effortful, or directionless, we can look more closely at what may need to change.
Openings, shifts in perception, energetic intensity, spaciousness, or unusual states can be explored without over-interpreting them.
When practice becomes something you postpone, negotiate with, or quietly resist, we can investigate what that resistance may be protecting.
Seeing something clearly does not always mean it has become embodied. We can work with the gap between insight and lived change.
Meditation can challenge familiar ways of understanding who you are. We can explore those shifts with both contemplative depth and psychological care.
Practice may expose material that attention alone does not resolve. This is where shadow work and psychological integration can become relevant.
Meditation shows up in how you listen, react, defend, connect, and navigate tension with other people.
Serious practice often asks for both sustained effort and the capacity to stop forcing. Learning the difference is part of maturity.
When it is unclear whether to deepen, simplify, change emphasis, or stay exactly where you are, mentorship can help clarify the next step.
NOT A PRESET CURRICULUM
The point is not to cover every possible topic. It is to develop enough continuity and trust that we can work with the material that is genuinely alive in your practice when it matters.
THE PRACTICE COMMITMENT
The Apprenticeship is designed for people who are ready to make meditation a real part of their life. You do not need to practice perfectly, but you do need enough consistency for the work to become visible.
RECOMMENDED DAILY PRACTICE
This is the recommended baseline for the Apprenticeship. Depending on your experience, circumstances, and practice direction, your actual rhythm may evolve during the year.
A sustainable daily rhythm is more useful than occasional periods of heroic practice followed by long gaps.
You are not expected to present yourself as a “good meditator.” Difficulty, resistance, distraction, doubt, and inconsistency are all legitimate material for the mentorship.
The value of the Apprenticeship comes from practicing, showing up, asking questions, reflecting, and applying what you discover.
If your practice becomes difficult or your circumstances change, the invitation is to bring that into the relationship rather than quietly disengage.
THE REAL COMMITMENT
The commitment is not to have a particular meditation experience. It is to keep returning with enough sincerity and continuity that we can work with what is actually happening.
WHO THIS IS FOR
The Apprenticeship is not about being advanced, impressive, or spiritually accomplished. It is for practitioners who are willing to practice consistently, reflect honestly, and engage directly with what the path is revealing.
THIS MAY BE A GOOD FIT IF YOU...
Already have some meditation experience and want more continuity and direction.
Have reached places in your practice that are difficult to understand or navigate alone.
Want a direct relationship with a teacher rather than another collection of teachings.
Are willing to maintain a regular practice and bring what is actually happening into the mentorship.
Are interested in how meditation intersects with emotion, relationship, identity, shadow, and everyday life.
Value both traditional contemplative depth and a psychologically informed approach to practice.
Are ready for a year-long container rather than a short burst of inspiration.
THIS IS PROBABLY NOT THE RIGHT FIT IF YOU...
Are mainly looking for a self-paced library of meditation techniques or recorded content.
Want quick results without establishing a consistent meditation practice.
Prefer to practice entirely on your own without feedback, dialogue, or accountability.
Are not currently able to make space for the regular practice and participation the Apprenticeship requires.
Are primarily seeking therapy, crisis support, or clinical treatment rather than meditation mentorship.
Want someone to prescribe every step rather than participate actively in your own discernment.
Are looking for a guaranteed spiritual outcome, breakthrough, or particular meditation experience.
THE QUESTION IS NOT “AM I ADVANCED ENOUGH?”
A better question is whether you are ready to practice with enough consistency, openness, and honesty for a real mentorship relationship to become useful.
ABOUT MILES
Miles Kessler is a meditation teacher, Aikido sensei, facilitator, and founder of Integral Dojo. His work brings together contemplative practice, embodiment, psychological development, relational work, and Integral perspectives.
He has practiced and taught meditation for more than 25 years and has accumulated more than 25,000 hours of meditation practice. His contemplative training includes intensive Vipassana practice in the Burmese Mahasi tradition.
The Meditation Apprenticeship draws on that depth of experience, but it is not built around transmitting a rigid system. The emphasis is on learning to see more clearly what is happening in your own practice and developing the discernment to work with it skillfully.
CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICE
More than 25,000 hours of meditation practice, including intensive training in Burmese Mahasi Vipassana.
EMBODIED PRACTICE
Decades of Aikido practice and teaching inform an approach that treats awareness as something embodied and relational, not merely conceptual.
INTEGRATION
Miles’ teaching integrates contemplative practice with psychological development, shadow work, conflict transformation, embodiment, and Integral Theory.
The role of a mentor is not to tell you what every experience means. It is to help you see more clearly, practice more intelligently, and gradually develop the capacity to trust your own discernment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The Apprenticeship is intentionally personal and practice-based. These answers clarify the level of commitment, the structure of the year, and what the mentorship does and does not include.
You do not need to be an advanced meditator, but the Apprenticeship is designed for people who already have some meditation experience and are ready for a more sustained, relational form of practice support.
The recommended baseline is approximately 30 minutes of meditation per day. The emphasis is not on perfection or heroic effort, but on enough consistency for the practice to become visible and workable over time.
The Apprenticeship works best when you participate consistently. If something unavoidable comes up, communicate with Miles rather than disappearing from the process. Specific scheduling and rescheduling arrangements can be clarified during enrollment.
Yes. Your Apprenticeship includes participation in the Meditation Discovery Cycle for the full year, giving you an ongoing rhythm of teaching, practice, Q&A, Sangha, weekly guidance, and access to the Daily Virtual Sitting Room.
You will have a private back-channel for timely practice questions, reflections, and developments that arise between scheduled sessions. It is intended to support continuity in the mentorship rather than replace the deeper work of the private and group sessions.
Meditation can bring psychological patterns, emotional material, and disowned aspects of experience into clearer view. The two individual shadow-work sessions create dedicated space to work with that material more directly when it becomes relevant to your practice and integration.
No. The Meditation Apprenticeship is a meditation mentorship and practice container. While psychological and shadow material may be explored when relevant, it is not a substitute for therapy, crisis support, or clinical care.
No. The initial Apprenticeship commitment is 12 months. At the end of that year, there may be an opportunity to continue into a second year if both you and Miles feel that continued mentorship would be useful.
Miles will review your application personally. If the Apprenticeship appears to be a good fit, the next step is a conversation to explore your practice, answer questions, and determine together whether to proceed. If you both decide to move forward, you will then be invited to enroll.
MEDITATION APPRENTICESHIP
The Apprenticeship is a 12-month commitment to sustained practice, direct mentorship, and a more mature relationship with the path. The application is simply the first step in exploring whether that relationship is the right fit.
A FINAL QUESTION
What might become possible if, for one full year, you stopped trying to figure everything out alone and gave your practice enough continuity to actually reveal its deeper pattern?
